Allure Best of Beauty 2012

Every year, Allure magazine does a big ol’ reader survey and finds the absolute best, brightest and most effective drugstore and high-end beauty products.

It’s an Allure issue I look forward to every year – and the 2012 Best of Beauty is out now! I love that it’s based on both reader input and editors picks.

Here are my favs, my rants, my picks and thoughts on some of the products that made the list:

Allure Best of Beauty 2012 Picks

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50 Face

My pick is the Kiehls Super Fluid UV Defense Ultra Light Sunscreen with SPF 50, which I wrote about in my post on the best sunscreen for your face (under makeup). Like the La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50, it’s thin and ulta absorbant and lays under makeup without any problems.

Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion

Yes, yes, yes! Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion exfoliant is the real deal. I’ve used it for years (here’s my review) and it’s THE scrub you’ll want to use when you really need to get yer clean on.

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in Skinny Jeans

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadows are my go-to, every day, easy eye look, I wrote about them in the past I love them so much. I do not have this shade, Skinny Jeans, and now I’m just gonna have to go get it. It’s always looked more brown in the pot but I love that it’s described as an icy gunmetal. SOLD!

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner

I’ve been using Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner forever… It was one of the first department store products I bought to solve a specific problem (eyeliner sliding off) I couldn’t find a solution for at the drugstore. It is long wear, deeply pigmented, and I wear it every day. Highly recommended. Here’s a “Get Ready With Me” video where I used it, and a post I wrote ages ago about what a great choice it is in humidity.

Here’s a tip though – order it online. My local Sephora keeps selling me pots that have been on the shelves a bit too long and are starting to dry out. I never have that problem when I order online.

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Sheer Solution Lightweight Frizz Control

Several samples of the John Frieda Frizz Ease new Lightweight Sheer Solution were sent to me, and I have to say, I really liked this stuff. It’s not as good as, say, Loreal Kerastase Elixir Ultimate (I had a sample of that I reviewed in my July Empties), but really, really good. And less expensive.

If you’ve used and didn’t care for the old Frizz Ease, try this. I was really pleased and am gladly finishing up the samples I received.

Fekkai Coiff Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm

Fekkai Coiff Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm does nothing for me and my wavy/frizzy hair – I bought it after reading pages and pages of glowing reviews on Sephora, but it just doesn’t do the trick. It must work for some glas though, since it made the 2012 Allure Best of Beauty list!

Even with my Keratin Smoothing Treatment, the Fekkai Ironless Straightening Balm is a fail – it’s been in my drawer for ages and I ought to just give up on it!

Neutrogena Make Up Remover Cleansing Towelettes

Another every day, go-to product – I use these Neutrogena Make-Up Remover Cleansing Towelettes every night to remove my makeup. They’re better than high-end versions of the same thing, and among drugstore brands they’re my fav too.

I think calling them “Cleansing Towelettes” is a bit of a misnomer though… They don’t clean. They are oily – as they should be, to remove makeup. You’ll want to follow with a regular cleanser though. Think of them simply as makeup remover towelettes, and you’ll be thrilled.

Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer

I don’t know what all the fuss is about Revlon’s PhotoReady Perfecting Primer – I was sent a sample of it and don’t care for it at all. I’ll take my Smashbox Photofinish Light any day – it controls oil and makes my foundation stay put.

Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder

I’m still very undecided about Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder. I’ve been using BareMinerals Mineral Veil for several years, and picked up a pot of Makeup Forever’s HD Powder on a whim when I was out of Mineral Veil, just to try something new. I used it in a Get Ready With Me video, and shared my thoughts there too.

It’s very, very fine, and I like that. But it doesn’t seem to, well, “veil” my skin in a soft matte finish as well as Mineral Veil did. The jury is still out, for me at least.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit

I tried this Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer kit about 8 years ago, and didn’t care for it. I keep hearing more and more good things about it as the years go on, and it’s one of those I’d like to try again. Maybe I was too quick to judge…

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

The NARS Velvet Gloss Pencils come in the prettiest shades, are a wonderful texture and who doesn’t love a chubby crayon lipstick? I’m sure I’ll love these NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils too!

Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons Tailor-Made Bronzing Powder

Since I’m a good girl and use my sunscreen now, a little bronzer helps me liven up my otherwise pale complexion. I’ve been using the Guerlain Terracotta Bronzer in 3 (here’s my review) and love that it’s a matte bronzer – too many hove shimmer and sparkle. NOT what I’m going for – at least for daytime.

This quad, also from Guerlain, made the Allure Best of Beauty list for 2012, and gives you a bit more flexibility in choosing how dark you want to go.

Tresemmé Split End Remedy line & Nexxus ProMend line

Nexxus and Tresemme are both owned by Unilever, who has developed the technology behind these two breakthrough products. The Tresemmé Split End Remedy line & Nexxus ProMend line use charged polymers to “temporarily glue each frayed strand back together.” This is cutting-edge beauty science, and Allure’s expert says:
…while these polymer bonds are only temporary, by using the products regularly you avoid the ends splitting again. Hair will appear smoother, fuller, and healthier, with ends that appear to be freshly cut.
Sign me up! I’ll definitely be trying these products!

Per-fékt Matte Body Perfection Gel Tan

I have a tube of the Perfekt Body Perfection Gel (not the Tan version voted Best of Beauty) and I like it… I wouldn’t say I love it. But it does even out skin tone. It’s got a consistency much like The PoreFessional from Benefit, so it’s essentially a primer with some pigments in it for smoother color. It looks absolutely natural, no one will know you’re wearing it. I think I would like this “Tan” version more, as it’s more pigmented and can be layered on, so you can choose how much coverage you get.

Clarisonic

The Clarisonic has long been on my “Favorite Things” list – having used it for about 6 years, I just don’t feel clean without it. It’s made a massive difference in my skin care routine, is how I start and end every single day and is such a staple, I wrote my own Clarisonic review to spread the word. When mine dies, I’ll be in line to buy another the next day (ok, I’ll actually just order a new one online, but you get the picture).
